The Vulnerabilities Research Grant was awarded to Elodie Rabatel, pediatric nurse in neonatology at Strasbourg University Hospital

The MUSTELA foundation awarded this research grant to Elodie for her research project devoted to “analgesia for premature newborns by maternal interventions during venous sampling: effectiveness, experience of parents and caregivers (Premamandol study)”

From the first moments of life, premature babies often have to undergo stressful and painful care, such as venipunctures. However, analgesic strategies carried out by parents reduce pain in the newborn. Concerned with a philosophy of developmental care centered on the child and his family, the neonatology department in which Elodie Rabatel works encourages the presence of parents with their child, as partners in care.

Elodie tells us more:

The actions we take to encourage the presence and involvement of parents are fully in line with the philosophy of developmental care centered on the child and his family. This care aims to improve the comfort and well-being of hospitalized newborns by meeting their specific needs, while integrating parents as partners in care. The benefits are proven: better physiological and behavioral stability, improvement of neurological outcome, strengthening of attachment bonds and reduction in hospitalization time. In addition, our service project lies in the implementation of a formalized developmental care program centered on the child and his family: the NIDCAP program (Neonatal Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program). This program is based on an individualized approach, emphasizing the observation and understanding of the specific signs of each vulnerable newborn, in order to adapt care to their needs and to reinforce the presence and role of parents during the 'hospitalization.
